Georgia Phillips – West Sioux Studios Member Spotlight

WSS - Georgia Phillips - 74The West Sioux Studios Member spotlight for February 2020 is shining on always amazing Georgia Phillips!  We have been amazed at Georgia’s ability to capture the beauty in all kinds of shoots since she started her membership with West Sioux Studios!  From engagements to glitter, from babies to roller derby girls she has a fantastic eye for composition and a keen ability to capture life in her images.  We are proud to shed some light on Georgia Phillips and Shutter-Up Photography this month!

Scrolling through her Facebook page and seeing terrific outdoor sessions in the prairie grass and open spaces of South Dakota, you’d never guess Georgia actually started off in California!  It wasn’t until she graduated high school that life led her out “this way.”  Now juggling the responsibilities of being a wife, mother, and full time business owner Georgia is embracing Sioux Falls and the wonderful people that make up our great community.

Before I ever me Georgia in person, I knew her as the photographer that captures the roller derby pictures.  It is a sport that is completely foreign to me… so naturally I was intrigued right away!  As I looked at her posts, even though I had no clue what was actually going on in the game (bout?, match?, battle royal?!), I could sense Georgia’s passion in the way she described her posts and really see her eye for detail and composition in her images.  As I have gotten to know her more, I’ve gotten to see that passion for her photography first hand, as well as see a much larger body of work outside of the roller derby.

WSS - Georgia Phillips - 68After her first shoot in the studio she sent us a few of the images straight out of camera… we couldn’t even tell she was at West Sioux Studios.  Her awesome creativity completely transformed the space and really turned out some awesome and unique images.  Lately she has been going full fledged into booking “Glitter Sessions” and with the help of her daughter and photography assistant dealing with the mess that comes with!  But it’s worth a little extra clean up time to see the breath taking images she is capturing, I am sure her photography clients absolutely love the final images!

Take a deeper look into the life and photography of Georgia Phillips with our Q&A session:

How/When did you fall in love with photography?
I fell in love with it when I was 20. Loved capturing all the little moments with the kids in the family.

How/When did you decide to pursue photography as a profession?
After a ton of encouragement from friends and family, I decided to give it a go about 6 years ago. It’s where my heart is. I wanted to set a good example for my kids. Let them see me chase my dream, and all the failures and successes that come with that.

WSS - Georgia Phillips - 1Where do you see yourself going in photography? Are their certain shoots you want to try, or new genres you want to get into?
Hopefully finding my niche! I love almost everything I have tried. I really want to branch out into stylized sessions and try cake smashes!

What is the craziest thing that has happened to you during a photo shoot?
Nothing really crazy has happened yet. Does falling/sliding down a huge ravine count at a farm? I am not a very graceful person!

Tells us about the gear you use?
Nikon D500, lenses I mostly use are Nikon 50mm 1.8 and 85mm 1.8 and Tamron macro 90mm. Godox V1 flash.

What is your favorite image you have ever captured?
A snapshot of my son giving my daughter a kiss on the cheek when they were little.

What has been your impression of West Sioux Studios so far?
I think it is wonderful! Such a warm and inviting place to work in. More than that, I love the culture that is being built there- the community of photographers coming together and learning, sharing with each other.
